Session Tile: An Intro to Futures Thinking and Strategic Foresight
By the end of this workshop, you will get an introduction to Futures Thinking, create and experience alternative futures and scenarios, and learn a few core tools and methods to set you and your organization on a journey towards proactive futures oriented decision making.
The future does not exist, but it can be imagined. These imagined futures take many forms, from the impossible to the possible and even the probable, from the feared to the preferred. These imagined futures are built on ideas, feelings, worldviews, and myths that we all hold. Futures Studies uses these imagined futures and the feelings attached to them to help us transform the present.
In today’s environment, where change and disruption is behind every corner, our systems of analysis and decision making are out of date and always trying to play catch up with whatever new thing is disrupting and changing the world. Futures Studies aims to use images of the future to help organizations and individuals anticipate how the world is changing, create alternative scenarios based on these anticipations, and develop strategies to transform in order to create the future we all want. In essence, Futures Studies helps us make a fundamental change from a short term and reactionary state of being too a long term and proactive one.
What to Expect
In this Futures workshop, you may be expecting a day of PowerPoint slides lead by an expert. However, Futures Studies believes that the future belongs to everyone and not just the experts. For this reason, the approaches used will allow for more freedom and a much broader level of interaction. Participants in this Futures workshop will not be mere spectators or passive receivers of the futures, but active creators and shapers of a common vision of what they would like their future to be. In this instance, the expert futurist is a facilitator, guiding participants through experiential futures and helping them explore alternative scenarios and create their own inclusive and desired futures.
